Tile Perfect’s Stand ‘n Seal Spray-On Grout Sealer Recalled Due to Safety Problems

In August 2005, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced the recall of Tile Perfect's Stand ‘n Seal Spray-On Grout Sealer after two people who had used the product were hospitalized. Stand ‘n Seal, made by Tile Perfect Inc. of Aurora, Ill., contains hydrocarbon-based chemicals. These chemicals are toxic and can affect the respiratory system. Breathing or aspirating these chemicals into your lungs can cause lung damage and death.

Any consumer injured while using Tile Perfect’s Stand ‘n Seal Spray-On Grout Sealer may have a claim not only against the manufacturer, but also against The Home Depot, the Atlanta-based company exclusively selling Stand 'N Seal.

The CPSC stated that the product’s odor is not chemically pungent enough to force consumers to minimize their exposure to the fumes. The spray had a sweet citrus smell, causing users to unknowingly expose themselves to dangerous amounts of the aerosol spray. Prior to the recall announcement, there had been 88 reports from consumers who have had adverse reactions after using the aerosol product, including 28 confirmed reports of overexposure resulting in respiratory symptoms for which medical attention was sought for coughing, irritation, difficulty breathing, dizziness and disorientation. Thirteen individuals required medical treatment including overnight hospitalization.

The warnings on the Stand ‘n Seal Spray-On Grout Sealer's label were inadequate and defective. The product’s label says, “Avoid breathing vapors. Make sure the room is well ventilated.” The Material Safety Data Sheet for the grout sealer suggests the use of a respirator and the possible use of air scrubbers to prevent exhaust air from contaminating the environment. Neither of these recommendations were on the on the product label.
